Jackson Spring Family Photos! {Baton Rouge Family Photographer}

It’s been a crazy spring! I can’t believe summer is basically here and the sun is staying out until after 8 each evening. Have I mentioned before that I actually think this time of year is

“the most wonderful time of the year?”

The sun stays out all morning and night rewarding us for the accomplishment of enduring another winter! Which also means lots of folks are getting married, graduating, entering new seasons...and being born. I mean I know this happens throughout the year but something about the Spring makes it seem like it all happens a lot more. It’s an exciting time. Somewhere in all the running around I got to hang out with a few families and let me tell you…looking through photos of little cuties is about the best cure for feeling overwhelmed…which this season also tends to bring at times. The Jacksons were no exception. Here’s some photos of sweet James and his new baby sister Madeline.

What a gift these sweet spring days are.

Melinda Jaye Tucker...My sister & her bridal photos! {Baton Rouge Wedding Photographer}

My sister, Melinda, was married to Loren Tucker last weekend in Nashville, Tennessee. It was an awesome weekend full of many emotions and will serve as sweet memories for my whole family for years to come.

We did her bridals in Calhoun, Louisiana at our dad’s childhood home and where our grandmother has lived long before any of us came into the world. Grandma Hutch wasn’t able to make the drive to the wedding, but she and our other fearless grandmother who was called home almost a year and a half ago now, were with us in every way on this memorable day. Their legacies and love were evident in every aspect of the wedding. What a sweet legacy it is. Grandma Hutch is pictured here helping Melinda get ready for her bridals including the necklace Melinda wore on her wedding day that has two charms representing Grandma Hutch and in memory of Grandma Jean or "Glam Gram."

I wrote a toast for Melinda and Loren that I gave at the wedding and I thought it might be best to reiterate the things I said today as I post Melinda’s bridals:)..so here it is!:

“Good Evening,  My name is Claire. I’m the maid of honor and Melinda’s younger sister.

As sister of the bride, I feel it’s my duty to educate the few folks here who may not know our bride as well as the groom. As many of you probably know when you grow up with an older sibling they are the ones that actually teach you most of the things you need to know in order to make it out there in the world. Older sisters especially teach you things like:

-what to wear the first day of school in order to fit in

-how to stay on pitch while singing along to Reba in the car

-And how to get the best results when asking Mom and Dad for more money.

Well, older siblings are also often the ones who teach you your first four letter word! Melinda was no exception...she taught me my very first four letter word at a very young age…

DIVA!

Now, before you get the wrong idea you should know that in our home growing up “Diva” was a very endearing word. Diva’s could sing very well...obviously. But beyond being a an incredible singer, being a diva..or strong woman...came naturally for Melinda growing up and she wore it well. Melinda comes from a long line of strong women, so to us a Diva was a passionate goal setter who wouldn’t give up. A diva was determined, self-assured, and persistent. My big sister fit the bill and gave an example of thoughtful perseverance and the joy that comes with knowing and accepting who you are in your own skin. In all aspects of her life, Melinda knew what God made her to do and how to do it well. Melinda is and always has been extremely talented in more ways than the one we all know her for. I’ve never seen her do anything half-way. She is a committed, talented, thoughtful, diva...sure of who she is and what she was made for and it’s contagious to those around her including the one that grew up watching it. Loren, she will be all of these things and more in your marriage. So remember what you already know...this girl is one of a kind..and trust me...you’ll never stop learning from her.

On June 24, 2012 at 11:33 pm. I received a text message from Melinda that said...and I quote.

‘Sister! Would you say I had a good date when the guy sends home with his highlighted copy of this?!!:)’

She then sent me a picture of the book ‘Prodigal God’, by Tim Keller. It happened to be a book that I had just finished. It’s by one of my favorite authors who is a pastor in New York City so naturally I replied to her message saying ‘yes..this is a good sign.’ Melinda then began to tell me all about her successful first date with this guy named Loren and we all know the rest of the story. Well, that book being one of my favorites to this day and being such a major part of what has led us here today...I decided to re-read it in the weeks leading up to tonight and I thought I might share a favorite quote from it that I feel sums up the real reason we’re here, what led us here, and what will be the only thing that can sustain you two as you go from here in marriage.

‘Jesus shows us there is another way: through him. And to enter that way and to live a life based on his salvation will bring us finally to the ultimate party and feast at the end of history. We can have a foretaste of that future salvation now: in prayer, in service to others, in the changes in our inner nature through the gospel, and through the healed relationships that Christ can give us now...

But they are only a foretaste of what is to come.’

To Melinda and Loren. May God bless you in marriage and strengthen you each day in him. I love you."

Jeff + Margaret...Audubon Zoo, New Orleans Wedding

I have shot in and around Audubon Park and Zoo before and everyone knows it's a classic New Orleans favorite.

I had never shot a wedding at the Sea Lion exhibit at Audubon before though.

Let me tell you...this spot shot straight to the top of my list. I was stunned at how beautiful it was.

This was partly also due to the fact that the day of Jeff and Margaret's wedding, the weather was incredible!!!

The weather could not have been more perfect...seriously.

And I honestly have to give credit where credit is due. Jeff & Margaret are a stunningly beautiful couple. In every way. These two live in New York but knew that New Orleans would be a perfect fit for a stunning wedding and they were of course quite correct.

What was my favorite thing about this wedding you ask? Well, besides how unbelievably gorgeous the entire day was...these two and pretty much most of their guests can really...truly...dance!!!!!

In fact...I believe the groom's dancing skills are one of many reasons these two ended up together!

This was definitely one for the books.

Jeff and Margaret, you two are stunning and it was a joy to spend such a beautiful day with you guys. I hope these photos will always serve as sweet reminders of an unforgettable day!

Andrew + Beth.. Bush, Louisiana Wedding Photography

Andrew and Beth were married at a wonderfully quaint church outside of Covington, Louisiana. Every single detail you see at this reception was thought of and created by Beth herself or a family member. Even down to the amazing chandeliers in the barn…her three brothers made these for the wedding! Amazing skills if you ask me.

Beth has dreamed of a barn wedding and looked far and wide for one. It was a beautifully done DIY wedding and from the barbecue to the bridals with a horse…this wedding fit these two like a glove!

Congratulations Andrew and Beth! I wish you two abundant joy in your marriage

Spencer + Rachel...My brother & his Baton Rouge Engagements.

I’ve known Spencer since the day I was brought to the hospital after he was born on May 21, 1992. I can’t tell you what my first impression of my little brother was at 4 years old….but I can try…

with words that will inevitably fail to do it justice…

to express my impressions of him almost 22 years later.

Spencer was a blonde-haired blue-eyed boy my Mom had always wanted. She literally had dreams of having a boy with blonde hair and blue eyes and I think she probably would have kept trying until God granted her wish. Well he did for the third one.… and Spencer became the baby of the family. With two strong-willed older sisters, Spencer rarely got a word in at the dinner table growing up…but when he did we all knew it would be good. With a rich sense of humor, strong convictions ingrained in the very heart of who he is, and the passion, sensitivity, and wit he got straight from our Father, Spencer captivates his audience when he speaks. He is strong. but he will be moved to heartache when confronted with the injustice of others. Spencer has the sensitivity, passion, drive, and steadiness of both our parents combined. I think I didn’t really realize most of my childhood that Spencer wasn’t really my age. He was my closest companion especially in summers when all there was to do was build another fort, ride our bikes around the cul-de-sac, and wrestle to the point of scaring my mom convinced we would break something or each other in the process. I can’t think of anything Spencer hasn’t been able to do when he sets out to do it. From the time he first learned to throw a baseball to deciding to be the sports editor at the Reveille, LSU’s student newspaper, Spencer decides he wants to do something, he commits, and he sticks with it.

This steady loyalty has played out the most in two areas of his life so far…sports…and the woman he loves. Spencer and Rachel have been together for over 7 years. They are highschool sweethearts, but first met as children in church together. On May 31st this year…almost exactly 22 years after the day I met him, Spencer and Rachel will get married in Baton Rouge where they’ve spent the last 4 years attending LSU together. After that they will move to Dallas to no doubt accomplish much more than they already have..together. Spencer and Rachel’s relationship, from an older sister’s point of view, fits exactly who Spencer is. He is committed to the people and the things he loves..for life. He will fight for those he loves and he’s done that for Rachel and I know he will continue to.

Spencer, you make me proud, bud. Always have…always will. I love you

I love you

For one day while in Rwanda, Kate and I got to go outside the city to the Muhanga District where we spent the day with 7 women who are artisans with another co-op, Ingobokarugo Cooperative, in Rwanda. They make baskets and jewelry that they then sell through Azizi Life who sells their items to folks in the UK and the states. Through purchases of these items, the women are able to earn an income for their families, provide a way for their children to go to school, and contribute in other ways to their household.

ClaireElysePhotography_BatonRougePhotographer-0434 ClaireElysePhotography_BatonRougePhotographer-0454

These women opened up their home and time to us to show us what a day in their life looks like. We did everything from hoe in the field to carrying the cow’s lunch on our heads, to preparing their one meal of the day to learning how to make the jewelry they make ourselves!

This was an extremely eye opening experience. I saw families and children who live completely on the land…and there’s a joy that I couldn’t explain. These people are living in what to us here in the states would be seen as some of the most impoverished situations. But they have everything they need…and then some. In these communities, the families and neighbors share everything. When it’s time to kill the pig or cow…it’s shared with the entire community. When someone needs a house..all the men in the community come together to make the mud bricks and build the home. This mentality and way of life is fundamentally different from so many other cultures in the world. This is also what made the genocide and the murder of neighbors by neighbors an all the more shocking reality.

I’ve already touched on the ways this community and village were affected by the genocide and what that did for us during our stay there. You can read about that at this link…

Something happened that day that I will never forget...As we were leaving the families including all of their children sang and danced for us. While dancing their traditional tribal dance, they were thanking us for being a part of their lives for the day. They don’t know us…they definitely don’t understand us and yet they were so welcoming…they then asked us to sing and dance for them. We of course weren't prepared and even laughed at first. But then we decided to sing Amazing Grace. They had never heard the song and it was a very moving experience. We began to get emotional singing it and had a hard time getting through the song. It occurred to each of us while singing about grace and eternity to those who don't even speak the same language that one day we will all sing together. We will worship and sing praises to God with members of God's family literally from every tribe and every nation..

when we've been there ten thousand years..

The kids in the villages all run to the street when they hear a car coming. They don’t see cars very often so when one pulls up they drop everything and run after it…waving and often yelling “mzungu!” which means “white person!” The photos of the kids and families doing this are some that I will treasure forever. The experience of that joy and welcome given to strangers was the gospel being played out. There is something in all of us...something that is not of us and it is God’s work to restore chaos in a broken world. Out of this chaos is a redemption that can be felt in the smiles, the dances, the hugs, the claps of even those who don’t even know the same language as us…and even in the car chases by children so excited to see someone different from them…there is a hint..a whisper of God’s grace, goodness, generosity, and joy that is real and that being in this world we have the privilege to share with others.

" After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9-10

Jordan & Casey.. New Orleans Wedding Photographer

Jordan and Casey’s wedding was at the incredible Terrell House. I can’t get enough of this place! They are absolutely one of my favorites in New Orleans!

Jordan and Casey had a beautiful wedding celebration complete with awesome gifts for one another (socks for cold feet!! ), tambourines for dancing at the reception (something the bride is known for), and even an accidental almost premature kiss by the groom who just couldn’t contain his joy at seeing his beautiful bride walking down that aisle!

Jordan and Casey, I wish you guys a lifetime of joy in marriage and growth together. I pray you rest in a love and joy greater than yourselves that will allow you to love one another fully.

Novie Rose Griffin...Baton Rouge Newborn Photographer

Nova Rose Griffin was born at 7:29 pm Wednesday, February 5, 2014. She weighed 8lbs & 7 oz.

It’s pretty much impossible to put into words the feelings we have for some folks. I find it actually a wonderfully difficult task to write on here about close friends and family. Mainly because no words do it justice.

I’ve known Brad and Laura for only almost 3 years now. My love for them and relationship with them has been one of those you just have a hard time remembering what it was like before they came along :). These two are like siblings to me and I’m so thankful for God’s timing in placing them in my life. They have been a huge support, encouragement, and have been used by God to trump a lot of lies I believed once before.

When Novie was born, it was like a family member came into the world. I’ve never experienced a joy in that way. I’m excited to watch this little one grow and seek to support and encourage her parents even half as much as they’ve blessed me with such over these few years.

Love you guys so much.

Welcome to the world, little one.
